Section 3: How to Put Together an Outfit

8. Back to Basics

You might be wondering, if my outfit is centered around basic pieces, how stylish can it actually be?

Believe it or not, having outfits centered around basic pieces, and accentuating those pieces with more on-trend or flashier items not only helps you get dressed quicker in the morning, it will help you look chicer and extend the longevity of your pieces.

TIP: I recommend choosing a basic bottom since bottoms are typically the most versatile pieces in your closet, meaning you’ll increase the number of outfits you can create.

Basic bottoms can be:

  • Jeans (rips at your own discretion)
  • Dress pants or trousers
  • Denim or material skirts
  • Denim or material shorts
  • Joggers or athleisure leggings

The key to ensuring that your outfit is chic, is to choose basic pieces that are neutral in color and as best quality as you can afford.

In terms of denim jeans, skirts or shorts, I suggest sticking with a darker wash denim, since these are typically more versatile than a lighter wash denim.

Since basics are the building blocks of your wardrobe, I recommend investing in good quality items that not only make your outfit look expensive but will stand the test of time in your wardrobe.
